Saturday, Sept 19 Belfast, Northern Ireland

Being here in Ireland we have so much more understanding and meaning for me (us?) of the island and all of its people.  Growing up and being exposed to the violence in Belfast takes on a new understanding.

Belfast looks a bit rougher than Dublin, but its only ~25 years since violence was a very part of the city.  There continues more negotiations of uniting the island which is a great step forward.  There is much to do around that.  Here it is, another reason we travel.

The stately looking building is parliament for Northern Ireland called Stormont Estates.  A bit of interesting info is during WWII they were afraid the Nazi's were going to bomb it so they painted with a mixture of tar and dung to hide it, but it took 7 years to get it cleanish.  It's never been totally restored to it original color.

We're visiting a farm and making soda bread today.  We visited Tracey's Farmhouse and made soda bread with flour, baking soda and buttermilk cooked on a grill.  It was good but doesn't keep long. Tracey & her family live on a hobby farm with goats, a pig, chickens & ducks.

We went to the Titanic Belfast Museum, very interesting and sad.  The museum showed the construction of the ship along with employees of the ship builders and the ship.  From the sinking of the Titanic many ship reforms were enacted.
