Sun, May 11, Tokyo to Hakone, Japan

This morning we had a late start to the tour so we went to the Metropolitan Government Building which was right next to our hotel. Enjoy the aerial pictures of Tokyo.

Our trip to Odawara was eventful in that our direct train, with assigned seating, was cancelled (due to a fatality accident!).  Our tour leaders really earned their stripes today. We did a lot of walking from here to there as a group and regrouping and walking.

We arrived in Odawara only an hour later than scheduled.  We met a bus (which I want to call a coach because that’s what our British tour guides calls it)  which took us up the mountain to the Sounzan Ropeway (cable car).  The ropeway took us up 1,044 meters in 8 mins.  Our ride was mostly through trees which was nice. But then as we crested the hill, where I thought we would see the top, instead we had this breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji on the right and geothermal activity below us!  A collective gasp was emitted from our car.  The pictures don't do it justice but enjoy as best you can.

Note:  elevation is 12,389 ft.  We’ve heard there is a 30% chance of seeing Fuji.
Mt Rainier is 14,410 ft.  I’m pretty sure we see it more than 30%.

They cook eggs in the geothermal pools and they turn black.  They are call 100 year old eggs  and they sell they them at the park.  Our guide said they don’t taste any different.

The Japanese are very serious about their emergency preparedness. Hard hats for everyone!

Transportation to our hotel was via pirate ship, Martha and I at the helm. (not really, but i think you know that)

Our hotel was on Lk Ashi, which is a crater lake. Average depth is 49 ft. And a constant temperature of 39 degrees.  No swimming.
